Key Characteristics & Uses
  • Clarity: It is the lightest shellac grade, perfect for enhancing pale woods like maple, oak, and ash without altering their natural color.
  • Universal Sealer: Because the natural wax has been removed, it prevents pitch bleed from knots and can be used as a barrier between incompatible finishes (like water-based clear coats over oil-based stains).
  • French Polishing: Commonly used by luthiers and furniture restorers for French polishing and building chatoyance in figured woods.
  • Preparation: It is sold in dry flake form and is typically mixed with high-proof denatured alcohol to create a "cut" (usually 1- to 2-pounds of flakes per gallon of alcohol).
