Button Lac Bysakhi

Button Lac Bysakhi
==================================================================================================================
Button Lac (Bysakhi articles/harvest) refers to a historically authentic form of natural shellac, melted and formed into circular disks. Derived from the secretion of the lac insect and harvested during the Baisakhi season, it retains 2–3% natural wax and is valued for wood finishing, crafts, and food coatings

Bysakhi Button Lac at a Glance
The term Bysakhi refers to the summer crop of lac (typically collected around April-May), which is highly valued for producing dark, warm-toned, and wax-containing shellac buttons.

  • The Production Process: Raw sticklac is crushed, washed (turning into seedlac), and then manually filtered over a charcoal fire by pressing the molten lac through twisting cloth bags. The filtered lac is dropped onto plates or zinc sheets to form solid 2-inch discs (buttons).
  • Wax Content: Unlike modern industrially dewaxed flakes, button lac retains about 2-3% of the natural insect wax, which provides enhanced water resistance and a flexible finish favored by artisans
